Welcoming Ronan Groome to the team

December 19th, 2018 | Rebecca's Spotlight

I work for the Irish Field as a racing journalist. Ever since I went racing with my grandad at a young age I’ve been hooked. I studied Equine Business at college but missed a whole semester because I got an apprenticeship for well known racing journalist, tipster and analyst Donn McClean. I guess this was always the route I wanted to take into the sport. I credit my time at Donn’s as the most valuable of my career, through the connections and what I learned in terms of analysis of both form and odds.

From Donn, I got connected to the Irish Sunday Independent, which I contributed to weekly for two years (writing feature interview pieces, opinion pieces and previews). I studied a Sports Journalism MA in London, worked on the production desk of the Racing Post for four years and had a small stint at Paddy Power Betfair, where I ghost-wrote Gordon Elliott’s column, until finding my current position at the Irish Field.

My main interest in racing is analysis of form, which ideally leads to a bet. I’d like to think I have a fair grasp of odds analysis as well, which is probably as or more important than knowing the bare sport itself.

I’m really looking forward to contributing to Marten’s already excellent package and let’s hope we can find some winners.
