Stoute in form on Ebor day
August 25th, 2017 | Ian Carnaby's Racing News
I am on holiday in Canada at present so these will be short notes.
I was pleased when Threading ended a lean spell and we must give stable-companion Dee Ex Bee another chance following his poor effort on Wednesday, though I thought the price (6/5) should have saved people because it was ludicrous. The chances are that he had only one to beat on his impressive Goodwood debut.
Mark Johnston has chances at Goodwood on Saturday with another unraced newcomer in the opener and MASHAM STAR in the valuable seven-furlong handicap. Masham Star moved up like a possible winner of the big mile handicap on the Friday of the Glorious meeting and seven furlongs may be ideal. Also, P J McDonald is now getting the chances he deserves.
The only other one I’d look at is LIGHTNING SPEAR at a short price in the Celebration Mile. He is a tricky horse to catch right, however, and it could be a tactical affair. He should still win.
Sir Michael Stoute is in fine form and I feel his filly DUBKA has a fair each-way chance in the Ebor after a good run at Goodwood last time. Stable-companion KHAIRAAT has top-weight in the Jack Berry race later on but has more scope for improvement than most of these.
Kevin Ryan is another in good heart and his MAJOR JUMBO, who was taken out at Goodwood when the rains came, looks to have prospects in the closing apprentices’ sprint handicap. He would like the ground to dry right out, which is entirely possible.
