Lampard the man for Derby

July 21st, 2018 | Ian Carnaby's Sports News

Having gone for Marin Cilic quite solidly in the Men’s Singles at Wimbledon I am not about to make any great claims regarding other selections. Still, if you went along with Angelique Kerber before the semi-finals you’ll have made a decent profit. She is playing superbly at present and was always likely to punish Serena Williams’ errors in the final. Sometimes we can take heart from the mistakes of the experts. Martina Navratilova, writing in the Independent, though that Williams had such a clear advantage the match might be over quite quickly. Dearie, dearie me.

It is a bit too early for the domestic football bets and I’m off to Torquay for a week’s break anyway. All I would say at this stage is that Frank Lampard has snapped up two very talented loanees for Derby and I think he is the man to return the Rams to the Premier League.

Talking a great deal of sense is not enough in itself to make a former top-class player a very good manager but Lampard is outstanding on Match of the Day and makes many points not immediately apparent to the average supporter. Derby have messed things up a couple of times in recent years and the failure of Steve McLaren to exploit a one-man advantage over QPR in the play-off final a while back lingers on in the memory. I think 6/1 or better about Derby this time is very fair each-way value.
