I’ve brought to your attention in recent weeks the practice of running horses with point-to-point form three times in novice or maiden hurdles, mostly over two miles, to acquire a favourable mark for a low-grade staying handicap hurdle.

Well it seems that the stewards may now be on the lookout for horses with this profile, following their action over the running and riding of Annual Invitation in the second division of the 2m maiden hurdle at Uttoxeter on Saturday.

It is my belief that they targeted this five-year-old before the race, because he was off the picture on the public screen after jumping the second last flight, from which point he was apparently tenderly handled to finish fifth of seven, beaten just over 24 lengths by the winner.

The stewards banned the horse from running for 40 days, gave the rider Jack Tudor a 14-day ban and fined the trainer Christian Williams £3,000.

Although I have no access to the head-on footage of the race, this did not strike me as any more suspicious than the rides we see in such races over jumps every day of the week, both in England and on a regular basis in Ireland.

Annual Invitation had finished third and second in two fairly ordinary Irish points, in December and January, and been beaten a total of 81 lengths in his first two outings over hurdles.

The evidence to hand suggests that the horse is nothing special but I assume that the handicapper will now require the horse to run again before allocating a handicap mark.

It will be interesting to see if the stewards haul anyone else in if they see horses with a similar profile to Annual Invitation. I don’t believe their action at Uttoxeter was a consequence of noting the ride, but more that they saw the horse’s profile beforehand and then watched him in the race accordingly. A case of what is now referred to as ‘confirmation bias.’

Reflecting on the weekend, I see that Timeform rate Bow Echo the seventh best winner of the 2000 Guineas since 1970, awarding the colt a mark of 131. Visually this was mightily impressive, with the runner-up Gstaad finishing eight lengths clear of the third.

Of the others, I expect King’s Trail to improve for a step up in trip. As a son of Sea The Stars out of a Dubawi mare, he should appreciate a mile and a quarter, if not further.
