Marten Julian’s Weekly Roundup 1 September 2025

I’m not sure how much money it would have taken to move a horse’s odds from 16/1 the night before to a starting price of 11/8, especially at a late-August Sunday afternoon meeting at Brighton, but an otherwise low profile day’s racing sprung to life for those involved when Arvana Belle scrambled home in the 6f 0-55 nursery.

As always when reading about plunges of this nature I play the hindsight game, as I call it, to try to see if there were any clues in the horse’s past form to suggest it had the ability, or potential, to win.

In the case of an older horse there may be form in the distant past which, if recaptured, would give it a chance. There are often occasions when a change of yard brings about improvement, and then there are instances when a horse returns from a break. There are, of course, certain trainers who specialise in getting it right a few times a year, although there are far fewer now than when I started 50 years ago.

But Arvana Belle did not fall into any of these categories.

The 2yr old filly had run three times, within a period of just three weeks, on each occasion at Windsor. She had beaten just six of her rivals home and been beaten an aggregate of 47 lengths in three 6f novice events. Furthermore, her connections … Rod Millman and Middleham Park Racing … do not come up on my radar as ‘ones to watch.’

The filly was shuffled along in arrears in each of her races, looking wayward at times, and on no occasion did she stay on or show early pace.

On Sunday she was dropped into her first nursery, off a mark of 45, and she looked beaten when hanging entering the final furlong before getting up close home under a good ride from George Wood.

I generally fancy my chances of spotting one that is being lined up, but not even with the benefit of hindsight could I have seen this one coming.
