A Momentofmadess for repeat win

April 6th, 2018 | Ian Carnaby's Racing News

When I studied the entries for the NH meetings this Saturday, the advance forecast going was heavy just about everywhere and, on top of that, the four televised races from Kelso were all handicaps. To be frank, I think it’s worth waiting for Aintree next week because Saturday might almost have been set up with bookmakers in mind.

So, the only recommendation is on the AW at Kempton, where I hope Charlie Hills’ A Momentofmadness can repeat last year’s victory in the Betfred Mobile Handicap.

He has a few things going for him, notably a draw in stall three and William Buick, who rode him into third a fortnight ago, on board again. A Momentofmadness is 5lb better in with the winner that day, Tomily, and should be able to turn things around, given a swift exit from the stalls. Bowson Fred is very nippy but always looks a short runner to me and is not as consistent as A Momentofmadness, either.

The problem, as usual, is the price. I’d be more than happy with the overnight 11/4 but, with things pretty tricky elsewhere, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Buick factor made the favourite more of a 15/8 chance. It’s important to be up and about early, looking for the value. I’d say 9/4 is just about acceptable but I wouldn’t go lower than that.

My main fancies next week will be Paul Nicholls’ Wonderful Charm and Dolos to make up for defeats when well fancied at Cheltenham. There will be time to nominate a few at value prices in the big one at this time next week.
