125/1 ‘Surprise’ at Redcar

November 2nd, 2021 | Marten's Current Racing Diary

Hi there!

Sometimes weird things happen and I’m not sure how it was that Magnificence was returned at odds of 125/1 for the 7f Class 4 0-80 handicap at Redcar today.

The Racing Post forecast is only a guide, but the daughter of Kingman was put in at 16/1 in the paper and was available at 20/1 in the early markets. On the track she opened at 50/1 and steadily drifted out to 125/1 before winning comfortably by a couple of lengths.

Now we are all occasionally prone to hindsight, and I admit that I never fancied this filly to win, but on paper she had reasonable claims in a modest race for its grade ,having been beaten a nose on her racecourse debut at Kempton in August before running reasonably well back there in September and then again when fourth of 14 at Leicester in October.

A mark of 72 was fair on various lines of form and she was less exposed than most of her rivals. Furthermore she had cost 210,000gns as a yearling, being a daughter of Kingman out of a half-sister to French Derby winner Le Havre from the family of Polar Falcon.

It seems strange that bookmakers allowed her to drift to such a long price when you consider that they could have laid her at 50s or 66/1.

Bye for now
