Hi there!
As you are well aware the Grand National meeting at Aintree starts on Thursday and with rain forecast for the first three days of the week the ground is expected to be soft, if not heavy in parts.
I was with Nicky Richards on Friday afternoon and he told me that this had been the most sustained spell of wet weather he had ever known, and that was at Greystoke, traditionally one of the wettest places in the UK.
The difficulty facing trainers is that they have spring-ground specialists primed to run while their midwinter mud-lovers are ready for a summer break in the paddocks.
Having said that this week’s Aintree Festival promises to be a thriller and I have news for a couple of horses that will be suited to the conditions.
The first day features four Grade 1 races including the 3m 1f Aintree Bowl and the Aintree Hurdle, won last year by Shishkin, who is entered again, and Constitution Hill respectively, and they are followed by the Foxhunters’ over the National fences and the Red Rum Handicap Chase – a race that has done well for us over the years.
The second day also has four Grade 1s, opening with the Mildmay Novices’ Chase with the Melling Chase and Sefton Novices’ Hurdle, in which I nominated 25/1 winner Thistlecrack back in 2015, with the Topham over the big ones!
There are three Grade 1s to support the Grand National on the third day, starting with the Maghull Novices’ Chase and the Liverpool Hurdle, won last year by the evergreen Sire Du Berlais.
