Dark Horses Annual

“The authoritative guide for over 40 years to unexposed horses”

Recent Press Review:

‘Why change a successful formula when it has worked for many years … the requirements needed for each horse to show his or her best are clearly defined … I was particularly intrigued by two horses in the Dark Handicappers section with just duck eggs by their names hailing from a northern yard … Julian is in his fifth decade as a racing writer and one of the main hallmarks of his publications is the professionalism of his research, and the toil of his labour shines through in Dark Horses. It will be a constant companion … ’ Daniel Hill (Racing Post)

Marten’s Dark Horses Guide (Flat Book)

Since it was first published over 40 years ago, Marten Julian’s Dark Horses Annual has become accepted as the industry’s authoritative source of information about unexposed and unraced horses.

Marten Julian’s Dark Horses Companion 2019

This year’s Dark Horses has a new look, now entitled the Dark Horses Companion and produced in a more succinct format than before. The usual features appear again but the Classic Previews, now called Classic Contenders, are produced in a more accessible note-style format. The Dark Horses Companion contains:

The Premier List – Marten’s select analysis of horses to follow
The Dark Horses – unexposed or unraced horses that have been brought to Marten’s attention
The Dark Handicappers – unexposed horses that may have been let in lightly
The Classic Contenders – Marten’s succinct appraisal of the candidates, some less obvious than others, for the first four Classics

All clients who order receive access to a secret web page where we list the entries from the book. This service starts on Friday 5 April.

Marten is in the final stages of writing the book and it goes to layout week beginning 1 April.

Dispatched mid-April £10.99

Marten’s Dark Horses Autumn Guide 2019

Marten’s Dark Horses Autumn Guide should, in part, be treated as a sequel to the Dark Horses Annual as it features his updated thoughts on the Premier List and Dark Handicappers sections of the Annual. It is also a source of reference to well-regarded unraced two-year-olds and a handful of older horses that have been prepared with autumn campaigns in mind.

Last year’s edition produced a remarkable profit to level stakes of 80 points, with 28 of the 50 two-year-olds that ran winning at a strike rate of 56%.
The winners included Raakib Alhawa (debut) 25/1, Zuba 20/1, Canton Queen 16/1, Global Spectrum (debut) 16/1, Floating Artist (debut) 10/1, Repaupo (debut) 8/1 etc
The Autumn Specialists section also made a profit to level stakes including Dave Dexter 8/1, Morando 8/1, Reshoun 6/1, Archi’s Affaire 11/2 etc.
Marten’s Autumn Guide is the ideal companion to cast light on the closing weeks of the season.

Price £10.99 (out in early September)

Review from a client of our 2017 edition:
